Factor The GCF From A Polynomial Example 1

Here is an example of how to factor the gcf from a polynomial.  Remember to read the lesson on this topic.

Basic steps to follow:

1. First understand that there maybe no gcf to factor- a polynomial could be prime
2. Prime factor each of the terms of the polynomial and determine the greatest common multiple- this will be the gcf
3. Write the polynomial as the gcf times the remaining terms- check to see if the product of the gcf and factored polynomial = original polynomial

Important habits to master math:

1. write out all steps
2. be very neat
3. use pencil not pen
4. review your work as your go
5. make sure you know the basics like fractions, positive and negative numbers and order of operations
